Helados Cid
Sabor Cid is the clearest documented case of the private heladería wave the cuentapropista reforms produced: a family dairy business that grew from a car trunk and a fridge into a factory and a flagship shop steps from Coppelia, explicitly positioned by the press as its successor in local esteem even though it is priced far out of reach for most Cubans.

What we know
- Founded as a family dairy business roughly 17 years before 2024 by brothers Yendri and Henrry García Cid, now registered as mipyme #286 on Cuba's Ministry of Economy and Planning list, with a dairy factory in Bauta, Artemisa.
- Opened this flagship Vedado shop at 23 y H on 3 May 2024, a few blocks from Coppelia, after six months of renovation of a former café/bar space.
- Sells both a cheaper 'national' ice cream line (five flavours, house specialties like Copa Cid and Affogato Cid) and a pricier line made with ingredients imported from Italy — 24 flavours, per the co-owner, made artesanalmente on site.
- Named by 14ymedio, alongside Clamanta, Gustó and Los Olivos, as one of the private brands that have displaced the state's Coppelia in local esteem: 'Cid parece ser la más apreciada' among competitors who have left Coppelia 'en completa decadencia.'
- Co-owner (14ymedio spells him Yendri García Cid; Naiz/AFP spells him Jhendry García) attributes the high cost of the imported line to the absence of an official currency-exchange market for small private businesses in Cuba.
