Heladería Scannapieco

An 87-year-old family house whose current interview material is unusually explicit about the artisanal-vs-bought-base distinction, with named, dated flavour histories rather than generic heritage claims.

What we know

  • Founded 1938 by Italian immigrants Andrés and Josefina Scannapieco (confirmed independently by both Cuisine & Vins 2025 and Infobae 2019, correcting a search-summary claim that the founder was 'Emilio')
  • Original Av. Córdoba location ran 1938–2010; closed on the family's own account of exhaustion, then reopened by the founder's grandson across from the Mercado de Pulgas flea market
  • Signature dulce de leche variants are named individually: 'dulce de leche Ástor' (with chocolate-covered coffee beans, named for Astor Piazzolla at his wife's suggestion) and 'chocolate Scannapieco' (chocolate base with dulce de leche, candied chestnuts and Italian meringue)
  • Family states explicitly it never used a bought base paste ('pasta base'): natural ingredients only, prepared in-house, a distinction the current maker's uncle draws directly against most other shops
  • Distinctive flavours with named origin stories: crema armenia (invented for the Armenian community across from the old shop), and an accidental lemon-pie flavour
