Conchanata
A Tuscan family has made gelato at this address since 1948, and the third generation still makes it himself in a kitchen of about nine square metres, from recipes nobody has ever written down. It shuts from December to February. That is what seasonality looks like when a shop means it.
What to order
The Conchanata: three scoops in a shell-shaped cup, a fourth of cream, under strawberry sauce.
What we know
- Seventy-eight years at one address, the oldest shop on Avenida da Igreja
- Recipes were never written down and pass orally from father to son
- Made personally by the third generation in a kitchen of about nine square metres behind the counter
- Closes from December to early February — the seasonality is a closed shop, not a marketing line
- The house dish, the Conchanata, was invented by the matriarch and its name displaced the shop's real trading name, Gelados Italia
