Monte Pelmo
A 1957 family business, born directly out of Amsterdam's postwar Italian guest-worker community, that still makes its ice cream fresh on-site daily and was independently ranked #3 of 18 tested Amsterdam salons in 2025.
What we know
- Founded 1957 by Riek and Chris Cornelisse, who began by cooking spaghetti for Italian gastarbeiders (guest workers) at a snack bar on 2e Laurierdwarsstraat before pivoting to ice cream (montepelmo.nl 'Historie')
- First ice cream machine was bought from an Italian colleague on condition he supply a recipe too (montepelmo.nl)
- Since 2021 wholesale production for other salons, restaurants and street vendors ('Monte Pelmo Gelatolab') has moved to Almere, but the Jordaan shop itself still makes its ice cream fresh on-site every day (montepelmo.nl 'Heden')
- Ranked #3 of 18 in Mokum Magazine's independently run 2025 blind taste test: "Wij begrijpen volledig waarom Monte Pelmo een van de meest populaire ijstenten van de stad is" (Mokum Magazine, 2025-07-01)
- Still family-operated three generations on: Angela, her husband Peter and their daughter Rozan work the Jordaan shop; new seasonal flavours are decided together each winter (montepelmo.nl)
