Antica Gelateria Ilardo

Ilardo is the oldest gelateria on record here and the only Palermo candidate whose granita is independently described, by a critic with no stake in the shop, as the coarser and less-worked style that is closer to the pre-industrial method than the smoother versions sold elsewhere in the city — exactly the distinction that matters here.

What to order
Granita ai gelsi (mulberry granita), named as a house specialty on the shop's own site

What we know

  • Open continuously since 1860, run generation to generation by the same family, per the shop's own site
  • Registered by the Regione Sicilia as a 'Luogo storico del Gusto' under the region's Carta dei Luoghi dell'Identità e della Memoria (D.A. n. 8410, 3 Dec 2009) — independent official recognition, not a marketing claim (Sicilia in Rete)
  • An independent 2019 critic (Dissapore) describes its granita as 'vetrosa,' with visible ice shards, 'meno lavorata e di conseguenza meno cremosa' (less worked and therefore less creamy) than the modern norm — the coarser, older-style texture at issue here
  • Granita flavours include gelso (mulberry), cedro (citron) and limone; pistacchio di Bronte named as a specific gelato ingredient (own site)
  • Sited on the historic Foro Italico promenade, described independently as a traditional courting spot for generations of Palermitani (Dissapore)
