Shave ice, halo-halo and guri guri are not scoops. Has every global list been measuring the wrong thing?
Honolulu is the one place in the American data where the Yelp 2026 most-saved ranking and a real, checkable local record actually line up: four Hawai‘i businesses reached the national top 25, matched only by New York, and two of the four — Henry’s Place and Via Gelato — sit inside the city boundary applied here. Under that bookmark noise is a genuine layered dessert culture: Japanese plantation-era shave ice houses running since the 1940s and 1950s (Waiola, Matsumoto), a Filipino halo-halo repertoire carried by several kitchens at once, and a newer generation of scratch gelato and ice cream (Via Gelato since 2014, Henry’s Place for more than three decades) built around Hawai‘i-grown fruit. The open question is real: the traditions with the longest, best-documented lineage in this city — shave ice and halo-halo — are not churned desserts at all, and the discipline enum as it stands has nowhere to put them.
